Basic Information:

  • The California High School Proficiency Examination (CHSPE) is a testing program that allows students to earn a high school diploma equivalent through testing.
  • The CHSPE is made up of an English Language Arts and Mathematics section.
  • If students pass both sections, then students can request a Certificate of Proficiency from the California State Board of Education.
  • Students can take the CHSPE and choose to stay in high school.
    • Students who pass the CHSPE, but stay enrolled in high school will need to work towards meeting high school graduation requirements.
    • However, if students wish to stop attending high school, then students must have a Certificate of Proficiency and parent/guardian permission (if student is a minor). Please follow the High School Exit Steps (listed below) if your student wishes to exit high school using the CHSPE.
