New SLO website: MVA Schoolwide Learner Outcome Student Showcase

The Student Showcase website is shared in the Mission Minute with families and HSTs can share the link with families as well.

At Mission Vista Academy, we have goals for our students that are known as Schoolwide Learner Outcomes (SLOs). SLOs are a part of our school culture; they reflect our school vision, the College and Career Readiness standards, and the education of the whole child.

The SLOs are an important piece of the big picture of student achievement. They help students prepare for life and work in the 21st century, support student achievement in all subject areas, and encourage growth mindsets and positive attitudes about school and learning.

SLOs are a vital component of the WASC report, and the school is expected to show how well our students are progressing towards mastering these goals. The SLOs should be embedded in various aspects of each student's educational program, rather than separate or stand-alone standards. Some things to consider:

Mission Vista Academy Students Are:

Navigators of the Digital World - Navigators of the digital world who are proficient in the use of technology, media, and online resources.

  • Completing online research. Recognizing reliable and accurate sources of information. Understanding and avoiding plagiarism.
  • Creating slide presentations and typing reports.
  • Using online learning tools, such as the OSP offerings.
  • Communicating respectfully and safely via email, Zoom, Facetime, etc.
  • Safely using online resources.

Self-Directed - Self-directed and motivated students who are able to set attainable goals to achieve academic success.

  • Engaging in self-reflection. “What am I doing well?” “In which area(s) can I improve?” “Where can I seek help?”
  • Setting realistic goals (educational, personal, vocational).
  • Applying appropriate strategies to overcome struggles.
  • Managing time effectively. Planning, organizing, prioritizing.

Personalized Learners - Personalized learners who are able to thrive in the style of education that best fits their individual needs.

  • Completing a learning styles quiz or reflecting on how they like to learn and how they learn best.
  • Choosing classes or activities that relate to the student’s learning preferences.
  • Allowing students to select topics. Providing choices or options to meet a particular learning objective or standard, i.e, playing an educational game or participating in a discussion.

Independent Critical Thinkers - Independent critical thinkers who have the ability to problem solve, take ownership, and apply their knowledge to a variety of problems.

  • Providing opportunities for students to explain their thinking. Articulating how they came to a solution or completed an assignment.
  • Applying ideas and knowledge across multiple subject areas. Unit studies allow students to dig deep and thoroughly explore a topic.
  • Conducting research and applying what they learn.
  • Solving puzzles and explaining how they figured it out.
  • Learning from mistakes; persevering through difficulties.

Responsible Citizens - Responsible citizens who demonstrate integrity and respect while actively seeking knowledge of local and global issues.

  • Community service projects.
  • Awareness of current events, both local and global.
  • Being civic-minded and taking responsibility for their actions.
  • Showing respect for themselves and others.
  • Discussions, research papers, reading articles, reflective activities and journaling.
Effective Communicators - Effective communicators who can thoughtfully articulate their thinking with confidence while collaborating with peers.
  • Writing, speaking, reading, and listening skills.
  • Practicing non-verbal communication skills.
  • Sharing knowledge, opinions, ideas in various ways.
  • Becoming comfortable speaking to and with peers and adults.
  • Collaborating with others to learn and share information.
